REMEDIAL MASSAGE IN SYDNEY UNI

Remedial Massage is concerned with providing physical remedy using massage. It can have beneficial effects locally at the tissues targeted (muscle, connective tissue, lymph vessels etc) as well as having more systemic effects such as on circulation and mood.

A qualified remedial massage therapist will take a history to determine which areas of your body need help and they will also assess the general state of your body to identify issues that you may not be aware of yet. For example, you may describe to the therapist that your low back aches and they identify increased tension and activity of the extensor muscles of your back however they may also identify that your hamstrings and deep trunk flexors are also tight and overactive. The massage therapist would be giving you a more complete session by working on all of these muscles rather than just the tight muscles in your back. Typically they are looking for weaknesses and imbalances in your body that they can correct and provide you with better function, rather than making you feel satisfied that a sore spot has been vigorously rubbed.

Massage therapy is often an overlooked element that can give a huge boost to your state of mind as much as to your state of health. If you have never had a great massage from a top place for that "massage therapy near me" then you need to try us.

Here are just a few of the benefits of massage

Increase Blood Circulation with Massage Therapy

As shown by Dr Nina Franklin, the first author of a study published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, massage improved vascular function of people who had not exercised during their study, which suggests that massage benefits people regardless of their level of physical activity.

“We believe that massage is really changing physiology in a positive way,” says Franklin. “This is not just blood flow speeds, this is actually a vascular response.”

She also said the finding suggests a "systemic rather than just a local response" which means vascular function is changed not just in the affected or massaged area, but in the rest of the body too.

The massage-only control group showed virtually identical levels of improvement in circulation as an exercise and massage group.

The circulatory response was sustained for up to 3 days, suggesting that massage may be protective for the cardiovascular system.

Relieve Muscle Soreness from Exercise with Massage Therapy

It is usual that there is a level of injury to muscle after exercise (whether mild, moderate or major), which can then cause the participant to experience soreness. Exercise induced muscle injury has also been previously shown to reduce blood flow.

As seen in the video in the section above about massage increasing vascular circulation, the same research on massage therapy also showed that massage eases muscle soreness from exercise.

University of Illinois at Chicago postdoctoral fellow Dr Nina Franklin said “Our study validates the value of massage in exercise and injury, which has been previously recognized but based on minimal data".

She and the other researchers wanted to determine if massage would improve systemic circulation and reduce muscle soreness after exercise. Healthy sedentary adults were asked to exercise their legs to soreness using a standard leg press machine. Half of the exercisers received Swedish massage techniques on their legs after the exercise.  Brachial artery flow mediated dilation, a standard metric of general vascular health, was taken by ultrasound at 90 minutes after exercise and then 1, 2 and 3 days later.

For the exercise-and massage-group, flow mediated dilation indicated improved blood flow at all time points, with improvement tapering off after 72 hours. As expected, the exercise-only group showed reduced blood flow after 90 minutes and 24 and 48 hours, with a return to normal levels at 72 hours.

After the massage, participants rated their muscle soreness on a scale from 1 to 10. As expected, both exercise groups experienced soreness immediately after exercise. The exercise-and-massage group reported no continuing soreness 90 minutes after massage therapy. The exercise-only group reported lasting soreness 24 hours after exercise.

Reduce Stress and Anxiety with Massage Therapy

Stress and anxiety have biochemical markers, molecules in the body that indicate the levels or degrees that someone is suffering these conditions. They are complex conditions however massage can play a part in helping as reported in the International Journal of Neuroscience.

The measurements highlighted in the research showed that in studies where cortisol was tested in saliva or urine, significant decreases in stress hormone levels occurred (averaging decreases 31%). In studies in which the activating neurotransmitters were tested in urine, the average increases were 28% and 31% for the 2 main positive feeling brain neurotransmitters. These studies combined suggest the stress alleviating effects (decreased stress hormone) and the activating effects of massage for a variety of medical conditions and stressful experiences.

Part of the improvement is the promotion of a more parasympathetic state which is the opposite of the sympathetic (flight or flight) state. This is a non invasive and very low risk way to create the chemical changes in your neuro-endocrine system compared to some common methods. Using the body's own mechanisms to promote a healthy state is a great option for you to investigate, however studies recommend you use well qualified and registered practitioners as quality will determine how part of much effect massage will have.

Increase Lymphatic Drainage with Massage Therapy

The lymphatic system removes fluid build-up and waste from the body and plays an important role in your immune function. It is made up of lymph nodes that are connected by lymph vessels.

If the lymphatic system does not work properly it can typically lead to lymphedema. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle massage technique that helps move extra fluid from an area that is swollen (or is at risk of becoming swollen), into an area where the lymph nodes are working properly. This is done by stimulating contractions of lymphatic vessels.
